Story Sharing Potlucks to Foster Community & Connection

Invitation to Start Something Special

On March 14, 2026, I attended the Pi(e) Potluck and Fundraiser hosted by Community Plate in Freeport, Maine. I am looking to start a version of this non-profit organization here in Virginia. If you or someone you know would be interested in helping start this endeavor, please join us at a kick-off potluck where we will showcase what occurs during these events and discuss how you can help us be successful. Send me your email at [email protected] and I will let you know how to sign up for this planning event and what to bring in addition to your great ideas.

Date/Time: Thursday, April 9, 2026, 5:30-8:00 PM

Location: King George, VA

What is Community Plate Maine?

Community Plate is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization that combats loneliness and fosters connection through Story Sharing Potluck Suppers across Maine where participants bring a dish, a story, and an open mind to engage in cross-cultural, intergenerational conversations. Each supper is organized around a theme with story prompts to encourage dialogue. The table is set with attention to detail because it signals care, respect, and hospitality to guests, creating a welcoming and memorable atmosphere. (www.communityplate.me)

Their mission is to address the epidemic of loneliness, which has been linked to serious health risks such as heart disease, stroke, dementia, and premature death. By creating inclusive, non-partisan spaces, Community Plate helps participants form meaningful connections, strengthening social bonds, and fostering a sense of belonging.

Why are Story Sharing Potlucks Important?

As a transitional coach focused on the needs of those of retirement age, I have seen how easy it is to become isolated once we lose the usual paths of making friends through work and activities with our children. Community is crucial for everyone but especially for those who have moved away from a full-time job. It acts as a vital lifeline for physical, mental, and emotional health by combating isolation and fostering purpose. Strong social connections and community involvement help prevent cognitive decline, depression, and mortality, while boosting quality of life, independence, and overall resilience. Our goal with hosting Story Sharing Potlucks is similar to what Community Plate Maine has – we want to enable and encourage conversations in the hope that participants will find connection and meaning with others.

Looking forward to our future conversations!
